A healthy product range, clear product information, continuous improvement of product recipes and making sure that dairy products remain affordable so as to provide as many people as possible with essential nutrients from milk and give more people access to food: FrieslandCampina works on better nutrition for the world’s consumers.

Nutrients from milk are good for bones and muscles. The proteins in milk are important for developing and maintaining the muscles and calcium is needed for strong bones. Dairy products form part of a healthy diet and can contribute to feeding the growing world population.

By constantly working on lowering fat, salt and sugar contents we make our products healthier. In the year 2020, the composition of 70 percent of our consumer products must comply with the scientific nutritional criteria captured in the FrieslandCampina Global Nutritional Standards. We also aim for a product portfolio with a good balance between basic products for daily consumption and indulgence products for occasional consumption. Our objective is to make sure that a minimum of 70 percent of all products are basic nutritional products suitable for daily consumption.

Daily intake of sufficient nutrients is important. Unfortunately, this is not achievable for everyone. For instance, iodine, vitamin A and iron deficiency is a serious threat to women and children in low-income countries. FrieslandCampina intends to make dairy available to as many people as possible, especially to people with low incomes.

The member dairy farmers of the FrieslandCampina cooperative supply milk to the company, which in turn processes the milk into products for various markets all over the world.

By adding as much as possible value to the milk supplied, FrieslandCampina can maximise its contribution to the income of its member dairy farmers and the continuity of their dairy farms. Now and for generations to come. In this way, FrieslandCampina remains an attractive company for its member dairy farmers and future generations.

Together with our member dairy farmers we control the entire production chain from grass to glass. This helps us to stand out and profile ourselves in our sales markets. The 'from grass to glass' concept is of great value to many of our customers and it creates confidence in FrieslandCampina as a producer of high-quality dairy products.

Sustainable milk repays itself. The demand for more sustainable and special milk flows is growing. FrieslandCampina is focusing on various special, sustainable milk flows in response to various consumer needs. Here think, for instance, of organic milk, VLOG cheese and PlanetProof dairy. Member dairy farmers making an effort to contribute to this, receive higher payments for the milk they supply.

FrieslandCampina has almost 150-year-long experience in dairy farming and in the dairy industry. This experience yields a treasure-trove of knowledge that is used to further develop dairy farms in Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe. All this is done through the Dairy Development Programme (DDP). This programme supports dairy farmers in improving the quality of the milk they supply, in increasing the productivity per cow and in acquiring access to the market. Member dairy farmers as well as special teams of employees are committed to the DDP.

Lead with sustainability: this is an important task that FrieslandCampina, including both the cooperative and the company, has set for itself. Milk production is very efficient in the Netherlands.

In the Netherlands, the emission of greenhouse gases per kilogram milk is almost half the global average. Together with our member dairy farmers we are working on further reducing our ecological footprint. This also includes reduced energy consumption and lower CO₂ emissions.

Furthermore, FrieslandCampina encourages the efforts of member dairy farmers in the areas of pasturing, biodiversity and animal welfare, and works on reducing the use of scarce natural resources, such as water, raw materials and fossil fuels.

The Dutch dairy sector aims at a two-percent improvement in energy efficiency every two years. By saving energy and producing renewable energy we contribute to reducing the use of fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions, such as carbon dioxide CO₂, nitrous oxide and methane. FrieslandCampina's production locations in Europe have been fully powered by green electricity since 2017. This represents 90 percent of the company's total global electricity consumption. Almost 28 percent of all green electricity is generated by member dairy farmers.

Apart from milk, the production of dairy products involves a wide range of other agricultural raw materials and packaging. FrieslandCampina aims to only purchase these materials from fully sustainably managed sources by the year 2020. Agricultural raw materials that are already (partially) purchased from sustainably managed sources include cocoa, soy oil, palm oil, coconut oil, cane sugar, beet sugar, starch and paper for packaging.

A cow that is properly taken care of lives longer, requires less medicines and produces high-quality milk. We work together with certified cattle veterinarians. The use of antibiotics has shown a decline for years.

For many people a cow in the pasture is a part of the Dutch landscape. A bonus on top of the milk price stimulates member dairy farmers to put their cows out into the pasture during the summer months.

Preservation of flora and fauna (biodiversity) is top priority as well. The Dutch dairy farmers manage more than one third of the countryside. FrieslandCampina's member dairy farmers consider strengthening biodiversity to be of great importance. The member dairy farmers are compensated for preserving flora and fauna.
